Improvements of the local public transport

October 2023 – January 2024

Münster, Germany

Project Description

The project comprises three projects to improve local public transport. The projects focus on predicting passenger capacity, multilingual communication solutions and analyzing the causes of delays, thereby addressing key challenges in modern public transport operations. These solutions are designed to improve service quality, operational efficiency and the overall passenger experience while supporting the goals of the mobility transition in Germany.

S-Bahn Hannover capacity forecast

  • Development of a real-time capacity forecasting system for the S-Bahn Hannover
  • Integration with platform displays and mobile apps
  • Use of data from the automatic passenger counting system (AFZS)
  • Consideration of several influencing factors (school days, vacations, events, weather)
  • Output format: four-stage capacity display (low/medium/high/overloaded)

Driver-passenger translation system

  • Implementation of a vehicle-integrated translation solution
  • Enables direct communication between non-German-speaking drivers and passengers
  • Online and offline functionality
  • Focus on compliance with data protection
  • Integration with vehicle systems (on-board computer)
  • Alternative solutions such as AI chatbots and service center routing

Delay analysis of the Mittelrheinbahn

  • Improvement of delay cause coding for the Middle Rhine Railway
  • Development of statistical correlation models for primary and secondary delay events
  • Creation of a legally compliant calculation logic
  • Implementation of a comprehensive dashboard
  • Analysis of infrastructure-related delays outside the Mittelrheinbahn network
